E-Commerce Product Photography at Scale

PDP workflows for fashion e-commerce: cut-outs, on-white packshots, batch catalog processing, and QA at volume.

E-commerce teams face a simple arithmetic problem: every SKU needs a product image, and catalog size grows faster than studio budget. AI-generated photography — routed through a brand-trained model — closes that gap without proportional cost increase.

This guide covers production workflows for product detail pages (PDPs): cut-outs, on-white packshots, on-model hero shots, and batch processing at catalog scale.

The e-commerce imagery stack

Most fashion PDPs require a combination of image types:

All modules can share the same brand-trained model, so a cut-out and an on-model hero shot feel like they came from the same brand — even when generated weeks apart.

Workflow 1: Cut-outs for every SKU

Cut-outs are the highest-volume, lowest-margin photography task. They must be accurate — clean edges on hair and sheer fabric, correct colour, consistent shadow on white.

Process:

  1. Collect supplier or sample photos — quality in equals quality out, but Cut-Out Photo is designed for imperfect inputs.
  2. Open Cut-Out Photo, bulk-upload SKUs (or process via API on Enterprise).
  3. Select output: transparent PNG or on-white JPEG at your platform’s required dimensions (commonly 2000×2000 or 3:4).
  4. Run batch. Review the QA queue — flag failures for regeneration rather than manual retouching where possible.
  5. Export to your DAM or PIM.

Tips for fashion cut-outs:

  • Process colourways from the same master reference to maintain consistency
  • Use the same background preset across the catalog for marketplace compliance
  • Hair, lace, and fringe are common failure points — regenerate with higher resolution if your plan allows

Workflow 2: On-model for hero SKUs

Not every SKU needs on-model photography — but hero products, collection anchors, and campaign-linked PDPs benefit from it. Photo Wizard generates on-model shots without studio booking.

Process:

  1. Select garment reference (flat or hanger photo).
  2. Choose a saved persona for consistent casting.
  3. Brief scene: e-commerce standard is often “clean studio, neutral background, commercial pose” — but brand-trained models preserve your editorial register even in simple setups.
  4. Generate 2–4 variants per SKU; art-direct the winner.

Route hero outputs to collection pages; keep cut-outs as the default PDP image for long-tail SKUs.

Workflow 3: Seasonal catalog batch

When a full season drops, Collection Photoshoot processes hundreds of SKUs in one asynchronous session.

Process:

  1. Prepare a CSV or folder structure mapping SKU IDs to reference images.
  2. Configure session defaults: persona, scene template, output dimensions.
  3. Submit batch — monitor progress via workspace dashboard and Realtime status.
  4. QA team reviews by category; approve or regenerate per SKU.
  5. Bulk export with SKU naming convention for direct PIM import.

Batch sessions maintain casting and styling consistency across the catalog — a common failure mode in traditional shoots spread over multiple days.

QA at scale

Volume without QA creates brand risk. Establish a lightweight review tier:

  • Tier 1 (automated): Reject obvious artefacts via team checklist sampling (e.g., 10% random audit)
  • Tier 2 (category owners): Hero SKUs and new categories get full review
  • Tier 3 (legal/compliance): Campaign and advertising assets per your AI output guidelines

Document approved session presets so junior team members generate on-brand output without re-briefing from scratch.

Integration and export

Platform integrations with Shopify, Magento, and major PIMs are on the roadmap. Today, export is file-based:

  • PNG/JPEG at configured dimensions
  • Optional metadata sidecar (generation ID, module, timestamp) for audit trails
  • Enterprise API access for direct pipeline integration — submit SKU, receive webhook on completion

Cost planning

Credit consumption varies by module and resolution. Cut-Out Photo and Flat Lay are lower cost per image; on-model and video are higher. Plan monthly credit allocation against catalog size:

  • Estimate SKUs × images per SKU × credit cost per module
  • Add buffer for regenerations (typically 15–25% on first season)
  • Compare against traditional photoshoot costs for budget justification

When AI is not enough

AI catalog photography excels at volume and consistency. It may not replace:

  • Complex location campaigns with physical set construction
  • Product categories requiring macro detail beyond current model fidelity (some fine jewellery use cases)
  • Talent-led brand campaigns where a named ambassador contract requires a specific individual

Use AI for the catalog foundation; reserve traditional production for flagship moments.
